A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who ran away after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
