Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The former official announced he would retreat from public roles after House committee disclosed his regular messages with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

He stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and look forward tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who once presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected Summers' determination to depart.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Political Context

This development follows after the two houses of Congress agreed on recently to approve a measure that would compel the US justice department to make public its documents on the case.

The legislation will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after changing his view on the issue following pushback from his base.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The emails indicated that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to connect Summers to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the emails were shared with the general audience, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to restore trust and mend connections with the persons most important to me".

Professional History

The economist occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a prominent member, verified that he was not affiliated with the group.

The former official joined the board of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
