Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
