Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Chief Executive Steps Down After Move Into Chicken.
A head of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit peak pizza while broadening the company into poultry items has been ousted after disagreements with its directors.
Executive Shake-Up
Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a long-term chief.
Rennie, who worked for the company for over 20 years, had sought to redirect the UK's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, stating earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted poultry was the most rapidly expanding menu item in the world.
Governance Tensions
Reports indicate that there was friction between Rennie and the directors over his approach and business vision, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
Recent Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief referred to as a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores next year as intended, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Statement
Ian Bull, the company chair, stated: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and value creation in our primary operations. We are concentrating on selecting the suitable leader to oversee the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”
Market Difficulties
Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the period before the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a significant fall in half-year profits.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut disclosed the shutting of 68 restaurants a last month, after the business behind its outlets faced financial collapse.
Health Efforts
Responding to customer preferences towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced reduced-calorie products, such as its light base line of pizzas below 400 calories as well as plant-based and gluten-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since the recent past, and previously worked for the gambling company William Hill. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the CEO position on a full-time basis.
She commented: “The company has a number of current expansion and operational projects that we will be dedicated to carrying out at speed.”
She added these involved ongoing development on the organization's logistics network and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also in need of a full-time CFO until 16 March, when a new appointee starts from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
