Suspected Harasser Inquired: 'Yet What If I Might Be Madeleine?'
A woman charged with pursuing Kate McCann reportedly left her a phone message which asked: "what if I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, 24, who a jury heard has consistently claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are facing charges accused with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, the tribunal heard call records and evidence retrieved from phones recorded Ms Wandelt persistently asking Madeleine's mother for a DNA test during the past two years.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - at the age of three during a trip in Portugal - is considered the most publicized investigations and remains unresolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
One phone message, played in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I realize I'm overweight and plain like Madeleine used to be, but I feel what I feel."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's recording stated: "Suppose there is a slight possibility that I am she? What then? Is that not crucial for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I maintain a life here in Poland, I just want to know," the recording stated.
The jury was told that by means of electronic messages, text messages and communications, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a effort to demonstrate a likeness to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and stated to have "recollections" from a early life with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with law enforcement who compiled the evidence, informed the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also communicated with family friends of the McCanns, according to the communication logs.
On that date, Gerry McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "the wrong phone."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a recording on Mrs McCann's recording declaring "I won't give up and I intend to demonstrate my claim."
The court was informed the co-defendant developed a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt preceding assisting her on a appearance to the McCanns' home in the county in that winter.
Call logs revealed Mrs Spragg had communicated through communication app to Mrs McCann to state the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "mentally unstable" but that she should be considered genuine in the months preceding the trip to that location, Leicestershire, in last December.
The court heard message exchanges between the two defendants, in November 2024, discussing trying to obtain Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her bins or from cutlery at a restaurant.
"We need to make a stand," the co-defendant told Ms Wandelt.
On the evening of the appearance to their house, Mrs Spragg transmitted a communication which said: "We find ourselves sat near the McCanns' house with our headlights off like private investigators. I desired to achieve this with another person I didn't imagine I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The case ongoing.
